Profile fields collect extra details from members, such as interests, a bio, a certification file, or their city. You choose which plans each field belongs to, where members fill it in, and whether they can edit it. The Member Directory block then lists members and their details on a page you choose.
When you’d use this
- Ask members for interests or skills, and filter your members list by them.
- Require a certification upload before someone can buy a membership.
- Keep private notes on members that only your team sees.
- Give an association or community a directory of its members.
How to use it
1. Add a profile field
Go to Constellation » Configuration » Profile fields and add a field.
- Name and Slug: the field’s name, and a unique slug (leave blank to create one on saving).
- Label and Description: what members see, and an optional tooltip. The label defaults to the name.
- Field type: Text, Textarea, Number, Checkbox, Multi-Checkbox, Radio, Select, Multi-Select or File. Fields with choices need Field options; File fields can limit Allowed file types; text and number fields can have a Minimum and Maximum.
- Membership plans: the plans the field belongs to. Leave blank for every plan.
- Show field on: My account, Product page and Registration form.
- Editable by: Members and admins, or Admin-only for fields only your team sees.
- Required?: members must fill it in before they register or buy a membership.
- Map to user profile: copy the answer into a WordPress user field, such as User first name, User biography or User profile picture, or a billing email or phone.
Once members have filled in a field, you can’t change its type freely.
2. Check where members see it
- Product page: the fields appear on the product page of products that grant the plan, and required fields must be filled before the membership goes in the cart.
- Registration form: on WooCommerce’s account registration form.
- My account: on My Account » My Profile, where members see the fields from all their plans together. Members with required fields still empty get a reminder to complete their profile.
3. See and edit answers
Open a membership under Constellation » Members to see and edit its profile fields. Filter the members list by a field with Open filters » Add a filter, and include fields in exports with Include profile fields.
Member directory
The Member Directory block lists members on any page or post. Add it in the block editor and choose:
- Which plans and membership statuses to include.
- How many members per page (12 by default, up to 20) and a list or grid layout.
Inside it, the Member Directory Template holds what each member shows. Add any of Member Name, Member Avatar, Member Email, Member Phone, Member Address, Member Organization, Member Biography, Member Join Date and Member Plans. No Records shows when nobody matches, and Pagination (with Previous Page, Page Numbers and Next Page) appears when the list runs over a page.
The avatar comes from a profile field mapped to User profile picture, or their Gravatar otherwise, and the biography from one mapped to User biography.
The directory shows to everyone who can open the page, including any email, phone and address blocks you add. If the directory should be members-only, restrict the page to your plans (Restrict content and files with Constellation). Leave the email, phone and address blocks out of any page visitors can open without logging in.
Common issues
A profile field doesn’t show on the product page
Check that Show field on includes Product page and that the product grants one of the field’s Membership plans.
Members can’t edit a field in My Account
The field is Admin-only, or Show field on doesn’t include My account.
The directory is empty
Check the plans and statuses chosen in the block, and that those plans have members with those statuses.
